Remembering Danie Durand

Danie Durand
May YHWH bring you safely into His kingdom, may He grant you eternal peace, and may we meet again in resurrection.

Today we mourn the passing of Danie Durand: Father, husband, and craftsman.

Danie is a native South African. He was a farmer in his youth and continued working in landscaping throughout his life. Danie was also an accomplished welder and metal-worker, whose skills were in high demand by employers and in his personal business. He created beautiful works of functional art, ranging from cast iron benches to fences and awnings.

Family was very important in Danie’s life. He worked long and hard to provide for his wife and two children, never stopping until the end of his life. He regularly sacrificed and put off personal comforts for the sake of his loved ones. His work ethic and commitment to family is a true inspiration in an age where many marriages fail and many families fall apart.

Sometimes Danie would send me a Facebook message at night. I’d look at the clock, consider our time zone differences, and think he should really be sleeping. But, he would often be awake and reaching out to me or his daughter (my wife). I didn’t think the messaging was a big deal until the next day, when my wife would tell me how excited he was to have that contact with me. I worried he might have spilled the beans on some of our conversations; but, I never had to sleep on the couch so it must have been alright.

Danie will be missed by the family he leaves behind. We won’t forget him, or the impact he had, as we wait to be reunited in the resurrection.

Since his breath withdrew
Storms have mourned without ceasing
For my bride’s father

Distance that kept us apart,
Vanish at the great harvest

Dave Sobkowiak
Left to right: Rip (Steven Hager) and Lanky (Dave Sobkowiak) at the Pa Renaissance Faire

The world has lost a great man, Dave Sobkowiak.

Dave is best known for playing Lanky Hemptwister at the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire in Mount Hope, PA. Dave has performed at the Faire since…forever. It’s as if Dave came with the property and the Faire just built up around him. He is the longest running, most iconic, character in the Faire’s history; and, the Faire will never be the same without him. Continue reading Remembering Dave Sobkowiak

How to Read a Book

How to read a book
Without sound study method, we won’t correctly understand and interpret the Bible.
  1. Start at the beginning
  2. Read in order
  3. Read everything
  4. Re-read the difficult parts
  5. Continue all the way to the end

This might seem like a ridiculous article (even insulting). Isn’t this common knowledge? Doesn’t everyone already know this from earliest childhood? Why would I expect anyone to read this?

The answers to these questions are:

  1. There’s no such thing as “common knowledge”
  2. Maybe
  3. Keep reading….

Given to the Jews

Given to the Jews
Israel formally received and recorded God’s Law, but God’s intent is that all mankind will obey Him. God has just one will and one Word, and He never changes.

Have you ever heard someone dismiss portions of scripture by declaring, “That was given to the Jews”? Is this a valid method of interpreting scripture? Does God’s will change over time? Does God have different sets of instructions for people based on their birth, their nationality, or their ethnicity?

Let’s objectively examine the “given to the Jews” argument. Continue reading Given to the Jews
