Being Comfortably Numb

Being Comfortably Numb
Points to Ponder: How can we be comfortable in a state of apathy and disobedience towards God?

Comfortably numb can be defined as being at ease or secure while in a state of apathy or unfeeling. If we apply the idea spiritually, we can say it describes one who accepts being in a state of indifference towards God, the word of God, or the requirements of God. The phrase could describe someone who embraces lukewarmness as an acceptable or desirable state of being.

Question: How can we be comfortable in a state of apathy and disobedience towards God? How could we be content to remain in such a state?

Comfortable Not Experiencing the Covenant

Behold, the days are coming, declares YHWH, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares YHWH. For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares YHWH: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know YHWH,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares YHWH. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.

(Jeremiah 31:31-34 and Hebrews 8:8-12)

God’s promised New Covenant begins with Him placing His Law within us, inscribing it on our hearts.

If you’re comfortable not having God’s Law on your heart

If you’re comfortable feeling no desire or inclination towards God’s Law

If you’re comfortable not experiencing a fundamental aspect of the New Covenant

Then feel free to remain at ease in your chosen state

Comfortable Disobeying and Teaching Others to do the Same

Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. Therefore, whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

(Matthew 5:17-20)

Jesus taught he did not come to overthrow or destroy the Law but to fully teach it and fully practice it as it was always intended. Jesus taught the Law will not pass away until the end of the age, when the old heaven and earth are destroyed.

If you’re comfortable believing Jesus did away with the Law

If you’re comfortable living like the Law is void and teaching others to do the same

If you’re comfortable being the least in the Kingdom of Heaven

Then feel free to remain at ease in your chosen state

Comfortable in a Lifestyle of Lawlessness

Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God. By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.

(1 John 3:4-10)

Sin is Lawlessness; it is breaking God’s Law. Nobody who lives a lifestyle of habitually breaking God’s Law has ever seen or known Jesus at all.

If you’re comfortable making a practice of breaking God’s Law

If you’re comfortable not practicing Lawfulness

If you’re comfortable being a child of the devil

Then feel free to remain at ease in your chosen state
